Liability Insurance

It's the most important coverage you can buy

It protects homeowners in two important ways:  It pays to defend you if a lawsuit is filed against you because someone was accidentally injured while on your property or because of your activities; and it pays damages if you are found liable (legally responsible) for their injuries and for financial losses they suffer as a result of those injuries.

Comprehensive Coverage for Personal Liability

This provides you protection against liability damage claims. It covers you for accidents (unintentional events) for which you are held legally responsible -- either for something you do or for something that happens on your property.

Liability insurance typically includes medical payments coverage for others injured by an accident on your premises or caused by you away from your premises.

Tip: Check each policy you research carefully for exclusions in the liability coverage.

Someone makes a liability claim against you. You may have legal costs regardless of your liability

Even if you aren’t at fault -- not legally responsible for an accident -- you may have to defend yourself against charges brought against you. The cost of lawyers, investigations, and fighting your case in court can be staggering. Personal liability coverage helps with these legal costs so you don’t deplete your savings or investments.

How much liability insurance do you need?

There’s no single formula to determine the amount of liability insurance you need to carry. Ultimately, you have to decide the level of insurance that makes you comfortable and secure. Many factors will affect your decision on how much liability insurance you'll need.  They may include assessing your tolerance for risk, what you think is your likelihood of being sued, and the extent to which you want to protect the assets you’ve accumulated. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  1. What do I stand to lose?
  2. What is everything I own worth?
  3. How likely is it that I might be sued?
  4. How much risk am I willing to take?
